The Surname Jennings

The surname Jennings is of early medieval English origin and is derived from the patronymic Janyn which literally means 'Little John'. The earliest known recording of this name is Roger Jonyng in 1296 in Sussex. It has become strongly associated with Wales and Ireland.

The Jennings line in my tree originates with John Jennings, possibly born around 1760 in the Kirkby Thore area of Westmorland. Elizabeth Jennings married John Steel of Bolton in 1846.
