Derived from a Medieval patronymic, son of Robin. Where Robin is a diminutive of Robert, a popular name in earlier times. Made famous perhaps by Robin Hood. Robert was a compound name comprising "Hrothi" and "Berhta" meaning "Fame Bright". A Margaret Robines appears as early as the 13th Century though the earliest Robinson can only be found in 16th Century Church Records.
