The Robinson Surname

Derived from a Medieval patronymic, son of Robin. Where Robin is a diminutive of Robert, a popular name in earlier times. Made famous perhaps by Robin Hood. Robert was a compound name comprising "Hrothi" and "Berhta" meaning "Fame Bright". A Margaret Robines appears as early as the 13th Century though the earliest Robinson can only be found in 16th Century Church Records.

The earliest Robinson in the tree is Robert Robinson born in Greystoke Cumberland around 1791, His daughter Jane married John Stamper and was my paternal Great Grandmother.
